Canada’s big west coast air hub in Vancouver is looking to a future with more passengers, more and bigger planes, and more amenities to keep travelers happy. And it’s planning to grow a glass-walled indoor forest.
Vancouver International won last year’s title of Best Airport in America in last year’s Skytrax awards, but it’s not resting on its laurels. After serving 22 million passengers last year, it’s unveiled a $5.6 billion plan to be ready for 35 million by 2017. The proposed amenities of “Flight Plan” were revealed last week.
Details are still being fine-tuned, but among the items on the menu are
- a geothermal power plant to reduce emissions and power the airport
- dedicated plane-spotting locations for aviation enthusiasts (and kids!)
- sleeping pods and showers for travelers with long layovers
- more and upgraded food options and
- a living glass-walled forest, open at the top
This may end up being the airport you fly to as a destination in itself!
