A bizarre cloud that floated over the Swedish ski resorts of Are and Duved on Thursday led to lots of UFO reports and some spectacular pictures. But, as it happens, no alien invasion.
The cloud was a ‘lenticular’ cloud that is formed by air being forced to rise as it hits the side of a mountain peak. That happens all the time; it’s the same sort of deflection against an airplane’s wings and flaps that allow flight. However, in the right combination of temperature and wind, the moisture in the air is condensed into a cloud…and sometimes into this shape.
