The familiar cobbled streets of Paris are being replaced, little by little, and one Parisian has found a way to turn a quick Euro on the deal.
Margaux Sainte-Lagüe bought about 10,000 pounds of the iconic square stones, which have known the French Revolution, Nazi invasion, and historic events going back 900 years, for €200, and is now selling them for €60, tied with a string and marked “Mon Pave Parisien.”
Regular stones go for €60; a gold-plated version is available for €150. And Sainte-Lagüe even managed to get Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo to pose for a marketing picture.
Paris first began paving with cobblestones in the 12th century, when they were seen as a solution to muddy roads and impermanent wood or paving. They’re as famous out of place as in; they have also been the traditional ammunition of revolutions and protests over the centuries—one of the reasons the city is removing them, at the rate of about 8,000 tonnes a year.
If you really want one (set of bookends? driveway repair? revolution?) you can find them HERE.
That’s MY morning coffee place, on rue Lepic. I hope they aren’t selling those!https://www.travelgumbo.com/blog/27-rue-tholoze
