Spirit Airlines is headed to Pittsburgh, with non-stop flights to 7 destinations. It’s just the latest sign that Pittsburgh is continuing to reverse its long decline as a major airport.
In the past two years alone, the airport has added 8 carriers, for a total of 16, and has upped its non-stop destinations from 37 to 68. Still not the same as the days when it was a major hub for US Air, but a big gain nonetheless.
Spirit’s arrival restores a non-stop route to Los Angeles that was dropped by American just a week ago. Southwest provides the city’s only other L.A. route. Airport authorities are pushing for more West Coast service.
Pittsburgh will now be the ninth airport where all three of the major ultra-lowcost carriers (the others are Allegiant and Frontier) operate. Spirit’s routes are to Dallas/Fort Worth, Orlando, Myrtle Beach, Las Vegas, Houston and Fort Lauderdale, in addition to L.A.
