Now showing at an airport near you: Movies

If you’ve come to resent early arrival at the airport and long waits after security, relax and buy a movie ticket. That’s a new trend at airports in a number of cities, including Portland, OR, seen above.

Most of the airport theaters, including Portland’s, specialize in short films because few passengers have long enough times for features, but Singapore, Hong Kong and Incheon, Korea have theaters showing full-length features. Most are  free, but a few of the feature films require tickets.

In Portland, the  theatre features films by local filmmakers and films about Portland. Minneapolis has See 18, near Gate C-18, showing works of local filmmakers or shot in Minnesota. It can also be configured for exhibits and other presentations.

The local-interest theme shows up elsewhere as well; at the Vilnius Airport in Lithuania, local films are the routine, and Czech-made films at Prague’s airport.

I can’t imagine anyone going early to an airport to catch a movie, even if free.  But if you have a long layover, perhaps not a bad idea…
