Don’t even think of dipping your tired tootsies in the famed fountains of Rome: It could cost you a bundle.
Over the Easter weekend, two Danish tourists each got a €450 ticket for sitting on the edge of the Vittoriano fountain in Piazza Venezia, with their feet dangling in the water. Similar incidents have happened at other fountains, including an arrest for skinny-dipping in the Trevi fountain. The number is up substantially from last year’s figures.
An official city spokesperson said that “When asked for ID, the two tourists were surprised, convinced that a ‘footbath’ was allowed. “The woman, very annoyed by the steep penalty, said that she would protest at the Danish Embassy.”
That’s almost €50 a digit! I knew the Italians would find a way to tax toes one day.
