Rome celebrates its 2,770th anniversary. Yes, 2,770!

The Roman Legions conquered the Eternal City again last Friday, as the city threw a parade to celebrate the 2,770th anniversary of its founding. And if no one can show the exact date on a certificate, well, no one really cares.

Thousands of people dressed up as ancient Romans, whether Caesars, soldiers, Vestal Virgins, gladiators and more, and thousands more turned out to watch them.

The city officially dates its founding to April 21, 753, B.C., crediting twin brothers Romulus and Remus as the founders. Although actual history of the city begins a bit later, it is perhaps unique among world cities for its continuous importance in world history and culture for over 2500 years.
