Montreal bridge gets ‘living light show’

Montreal is celebrating its 375th birthday this year, as well as Canada’s 150th, and it’s just given itself a spectacular birthday present, in the form of an interactive light show for its signature Jacques Cartier Bridge.

The lights were turned on last night for the first time, complete with official ceremonies and speeches, but the star of the show is the program that connects the show, called “Living Connections,” to millions of human and natural connections that change with the seasons, natural light and human activity.

The bridge lighting is based on a 365-color calendar that changes through the seasons, and the intensity, speed and density of sparkles of light changes depending on how often Montreal is mentioned on Twitter, and whether the tweet is retweeted. At night, animated lighting sequences visually translate the city’s life based on data from weather, traffic, news and more. You can see an opening night video here.
