Combine Ryanair, Italy’s 3rd busiest airport and Europe’s biggest shopping mall, and you have a whole new destination for shoppers—or so the developers hope.
The Oriocenter mall, adjacent to Orio al Serio International Airport at Bergamo, northeast of Milan, has just been expanded by 50%, and now has 105,000 sq. meters, 280 stores, 50 restaurants, a 14-screen theatre and a massive hypermarket, as well as access to the airport through a tunnel.
On the minus side, the airport was named second worst in the world in 2013, but both the airport and the airlines are hoping the mall will be a plus. In addition to a wide variety of regular merchandise in ground floor stores, it has an upper level focused on luxury brands and international names. A number of brands will open their first spots in Italy at the mall, including the Japanese restaurant chain Wagamama.
