I have fond memories of grain elevators alongside railroad tracks in countless towns across Canada along the Trans Canada Highway.
The old grain elevators are the icons of the prairies and were what I was used to seeing when I grew up. Each prairie town had at least one of these (this photo courtesy Wikimedia), and when you drive across the flat plains you can see where the next town would be by the location of the elevators.
Most of these old elevators have been torn down and replaced with the new steel and concrete monsters you see above. I understand that they are more functional, but a bit of history is lost.
