Bet you didn’t even know there were tram-driving contests!
But yes, there are, and this year marked the 6th annual tournament, held in Santa Cruz, Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Two-person teams, one male and one female on each, competed for the prizes. In this year’s contest, Paris finished first, followed by Berlin.
The competition includes tests in acceleration, judging distance between tram and obstacles, and a bizarre sport called tram-bowling, above and in the video below.
This year’s team winner was Paris, followed by Berlin. Franka Sonntag of Berlin beat out rivals from Budapest and Bergen for best female driver; top honors for men went to Karim Annouche of Paris, followed by men from Frankfurt and Zurich.
If this has got your travel engines started, make a note: 7th annual Tram-EM European Tramdriver Championship is set for Stuttgart, Germany on May 5, 2018.
