French bus drivers at war over heat and pants

France has been suffering a heat wave lately, and bus drivers in Nantes in western France want out of their hot uniform trousers, but the company has given short shrift to their demand for shorts. And so some of them have shifted to skirts in protest.

The drivers complain that their cabins on the non-airconditioned buses get as hot as 50C (about 110F), and that “Our uniform is not appropriate for these high temperatures. We envy women at moments like this. Given that skirts are an authorized outfit in the company, we are wearing skirts,” a drivers’ union spokesman told local media.

France’s labor code doesn’t ban shorts at work, but does give workers the right to stop work if they believe their jobs and working conditions threaten their health. Perhaps that will be the next step if the company doesn’t find a way to skirt the controversy.
