A summer drought in a year marked by high temperatures in Europe has led Rome to start shutting down many of its many public drinking fountains.
Rome is said to have the most fountains of any city in the world—over 2000. Aside from the 50 “monumental” fountains such as the Trevi, which recirculate the water they use, there are hundreds of drinking water fountains, such as the one above.
In addition to saving water, the partial shutdown will allow Acea, the Rome water management agency, to make needed repairs to pipes and fountains, some of which are hundreds of years old.
