Paris’s on-going fight against the accumulation of litter, rats and public urination has made headway, the city says, but more staff and more cooperation is needed.
Fines for ‘uncivil behavior,’ pegged at €68 per offense have jumped 67% since last year, but some areas of the capital, including along the iconic Canal Saint-Martin, above, continue to pose problems. Their popularity draws crowds, and leaves behind debris.
Authorities are especially concerned about litter and food waste, as it helps feed an out-of-control rat population that can spread diseases. Not to mention the bad impression it makes on visitors! According to City Hall, the city is now spending €500 million a year on clean-up.
