A 7,000 piece collection of contemporary art, including paintings, sculptures and photos, is being lent to Spain by Cuban-American collector Robert Polo. The 15-year loan will stock two new museums in Toledo and Cuenca.
The collection includes works by dozens of well-known artists, including Max Ernst, are in effect an advance donation by the Cuban-born Polo, who lives in Brussels. “I have always loaned works, and in the end if they have been well taken care of, valued and respected, I have always ended up donating them, but I first want to have proof that they are valued and respected as they should,” Polo said.
The regional government of Catilla-La Mancha will refurbish the former Santa Fe museum in Toledo, and will turn a former public records office in Cuenca into a museum to house the works. They will go on view starting in 2018, in Toledo, with Cuenca to follow.
