The Swiss Federal Railways is laying out plans for service speed-ups ahead of the opening of the Ceneri tunnel, the last link in its new routes through (and under) the Alps.
The Ceneri is part of the huge project that also includes the 57 km Gotthard Base Tunnel which opened last year. The Ceneri, which will open in 2020, will allow high-speed Superveloce trains to cut as much as 75 minutes off the up-to-4 hour trip between Zurich and Milan.
The line through the Gotthard tunnel has already increased passenger traffic on its route by 30%, and has handled 17,000 freight train. Adding the Ceneri tunnel will allow longer trains, with greater capacity, to use the line.
