Switzerland gets unusual avalanche-proof theatre

A new theatre high in the Swiss Alps has been built to withstand avalanches and winds up to 240km/h, but isn’t intended to do that for long: It will be taken down in three years.

The wooden building, mostly hollow, was built for the Origen contemporary opera festival in Switzerland’s Graubünden region, in Julier Pass. According to the theatre company, it’s supposed to promote a dialog between performance and landscape and to direct “the view of the audience again and again to the vastness of the landscape.”

Performances in the 250-seat theatre will be held at dusk It’s intended as a year-round venue while it lasts, but needs another €1 million to winterize the €2 million structure. The 2020 demolition deadline was set, the organizers say, to symbolize the “fleeting art form of theatre.”
