Harvest time in Northern England arrives weeks before the Capital – London. Birds and squirrels will soon be looking for food to fatten themselves before Autumn takes a hold. Mr. Magpie will have a peck at anything and ruin fruit. And insects will soon plant their offspring into anything sweet. So we have to pick the fruits of our labours before anything gets at them. Raspberries, Gooseberries, Blackberries and now it’s the Apples turn to come in from the garden. The Tomatoes are grown in the Greenhouse and often last until Christmas – when left on the plants. Can I smell an Apple Pie ?
Food, Fado, and Football in Porto, Portugal
With several days to spend in Porto, Jonathan L explores several aspects of local culture
Thanks for commenting Travel Luver. They are called Katy. They were invented (?) in Sweden for cooler climates. Self pollinating, disease resistant and quite a heavy cropper. Its only a dwarf tree and only 2 years old – when I picked 9 apples. Count is around 40 now so who knows – next year maybe 100 ! I grow them in front of the kitchen window – always admired when visitors call.
Those apples sure do look good. Are they Gala apples?
