American Airlines is adding two cities and additional flights to its European network for next year, providing more independent options for U.S. flyers.
Budapest and Prague will get daily round-trip service from Philadelphia from May through October, using 767s; Venice, which American serves from Philadelphia in season, will now get a 787 flight non-stop from Chicago.
These additions may foretell a change in American’s strategy. It has the thinnest European network of American carriers, relying heavily on its British Air joint venture partner to move passengers to European cities with a transfer at London Heathrow. But the availability of direct flights to many European cities from a variety of U.S. cities, including by discount carriers, could bring a change for AA.
