British recipe site Twisted Food’s offer of a ‘new take’ on the croissant has created a stir in France, where tensions are already high enough over Brexit.
SatisfyingTaste, the Twitter account that launched the recipe into social media, said “Croissants but not as you know it!!! Could this get any better?!?” The answer promptly came from a slew of French responders, with varying intensity and punctuation. Among the mildest was “I feel insulted not just as a French person, but as a living being in possession of a culture.”
Gumbo readers may remember last year’s war over croissants that were straight instead of curved. That was a mild modification compared to this one, which stuffs the croissants with bacon and sausages, covers them in eggs and cream and bakes them in the oven until the entire mixture is browned (‘charred,’ according to TheLocal.fr). The finished product is then sliced in squares and served with maple syrup on top.
Mon dieu!
