French singer’s rooster hits a sour note

A rooster belonging to singer Corinne Fesseau has stirred up a small storm on a small island in southwest France because owners of a neighboring holiday cottage want to sleep in.

Fesseau, who was born and raised on the island of Oléron, started receiving complaints from the neighbor in May. She lined the chicken coop with egg boxes for soundproofing, and kept the rooster, named Maurice, in his cage overnight…but the complaints continued., and the neighbor took it to court, claiming that the morning crowing was “a nuisance that posed a risk to their health.”

From there, it’s only gotten bigger. Fesseau, who says the neighbor only uses the house three times a year, pointed out that the hen house has always been there, and that the neighbors should adjust to rural life.

Petitions on Maurice’s behalf have gathered over 30,000 signatures, Fesseau organized a march through the town to drum up support, and now the Mayor has promised local legislation to defend the bird. He told France Blue that “…we have a rural fabric of life, the song of the cock is part of this, and I will protect the cock to defend our way of life.”

Best buy earplugs before leaving Paris!
