Alhambra’s night-owl visitors to have a hoot

The Alhambra fortress and gardens in Granada, one of the world’s best-known sights, and one of Spain’s most popular, is getting a new attraction, as authorities work to lure colonies of owls to nest there.

They’ll provide an added dimension for visitors who choose night-time visits, as many do. Trustees of the site have approved placing 22 wooden nest boxes for owls in the Arabic gardens. “We need to place the same value on nature conversation as we do on cultural treasures,” they explained in a press release.

The hope is to lure two species of owls to the pine and eucalyptus trees in the formal gardens. One, the tawny owl, has already arrived.  No word yet on whether the other, the tiny scops owl, has made reservations yet.
