It seems there’s no way to resist a Viking invasion: Viking River Cruises has just ordered more ships for its European cruises. The seven new ships will push the total to nearly 70.
Viking, which is completing its 20th year, has grown from two used ships to be the largest river fleet in the world. In addition to Europe, it also operates ships in Egypt, China, Russia and Southeast Asia, and has plans to operate on the Mississippi as well.
Six of the new ships will be the familiar ‘Viking Longboat’ design familiar to watchers of public broadcasting shows the company sponsors. They are destined for the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers. The other will cruise on Portugal’s Douro River. All are scheduled to join the fleet in 2019.
