A Guide To: Family Activities in North Wales

Planning a short break or family day trip can sometimes be a stressful process. It can seem near impossible to find a destination, accommodation and activities that cater for the whole family.

Thankfully, North Wales has a wide range of fantastic activities and quality family friendly B&B accommodation to suit your needs.

For inspiration, here’s a list of four great family friendly activities to try on your next visit to North Wales.

Criccieth Castle

Whilst there are many castles in North Wales, Criccieth Castle is certainly one of the best. Situated between two pebbly beaches, it dominates the landscape sitting atop a rocky promontory which overlooks Tremadog Bay. The 13th century castle was originally built by Llywelyn the Great, who used English designs to model the legendary gatehouse.

On a clear day, it is easy to see why the Welsh chose this location to build this castle; as anyone standing on top of the hilltop can see as far as Snowdonia to the north, the entire Lleyn Peninsula to the west, and even Harlech Castle to the southeast. The castle also houses an exhibition about its history, which includes interactive displays and hands-on activities to keep your little ones entertained.

For up to date information about opening times and admission costs, please visit the Criccieth Castle website here.

Sygun Copper Mine

Situated in the heart of Snowdonia National Park, lies an old Victorian copper mine which closed over 100 years ago. The Sygun Mine recently won the ‘Prince of Wales Award for Tourism’, and is considered one of the wonders of Wales. The mine offers self-guided audio-visual tours which allow you to explore the old workings on foot.

Be prepared to be wowed by the winding tunnels, copper ore veins, colourful chambers and incredible stalactite and stalagmite formations!

Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway: Santa Train

If you want to experience quality time with your family in a timeless way, then the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway is the perfect place to do so. December also brings the annual visit of Santa and his elves, who pass through the train giving out presents, with plenty of laughter and jokes along the way.

Once you reach the village of Beddgelert, you can stretch your legs, enjoy the stunning views and take a couple of photographs with Santa and his little helpers

Madog Quads

Spanning over 30 acres of countryside close to the beautiful village of Tremadog, Madog Quads offer an exhilarating day out for all the family. Quadbikes are available for all abilities and in all weather, where you can enjoy a relaxing ride round their trekking centre, or venture out into the beautiful highland and try your hand at negotiating various bumps, dips and mud traps.

To book your quad-biking adventure, please visit the Madog Quads website here.
