When the Normans invaded Sicily and took control from the Saracens, they created many forts to help control the sea access to key ports. One of those is Castello Normanno, near the city of Sicily. It is a beautiful square-shaped tower built out of the basalt rock from Mt. Etna.
The beach in the town is the rocky shore you see here. Nearby is the town of Aci Terrazo, where two large basaltic outcroppings sit just off the the coast. The legend is that these rocks are the stones that The Cyclops threw at the fleeing Odysseus in Homer’s The Odyssey.
