A new poll puts boeuf bourguignon, a home-cooking family favorite from central France at the top of a list of dishes that best represent French gastronomy.
The dish, originally from Burgundy, is essentially a stew made with chunks of beef, mushrooms, carrots, lardons, shallots and Burgundy wine. It’s usually served with potatoes.
The Toluna Institute survey placed a lot of familiar dishes on the list. Number 2 was blanquette de veau, veal in cream sauce. In third place, the familiar steak frites, followed by cassoulet and magret de canard.
Some of the dishes that are stereotypical in foreigners’ view of French cuisine, such as snails and frogs’ legs, made it onto the top 10, below Belgian favorite mussels and fries.
