Belfast is celebrating its long maritime heritage with two new attractions in its waterfront ‘Titanic Quarter,’ with grand openings last week.
A 500-metre ‘Titanic Walkway’ now connects the Titanic Slipways, where the doomed liner was built to other attractions, including HMS Caroline and the Thompson Dock. The entire distance is lined with decorative panels highlighting the city’s marine heritage.
And nearby, the Great Light is now on exhibit. Built in the 1880s, this hyper-radial fresnel-lensed optic weighs 10 tonnes and is 7 metres high. Known as one of the strongest lighthouse beams ever, it was in lighthouse service on Tory Island and Mew Island until it was replaced in 2014 by a solar-powered LED.
