The Inn and Ilz Rivers meet the Danube at Passau, Germany, a city of 50,000 dating to the 2nd century. When the Romans arrived, and took possession from a Celtic tribe, they built a fortress because of the excellent strategic position on the rivers. As the fortress grew, Passau became a city.
In 1662, a devastating fire consumed most of the city. Passau was rebuilt in the Gothic and Baroque style. A large area of the city retains this beauty. With rich reminders of the past, my AmaWaterways guide pointed out significant landmarks. It was easy to imagine the 17th century as I walked along narrow lanes, under archways, and past homes and shops with ornate facades.
I walked along the rivers, past churches and cathedrals and into quiet little shops before returning to the AmaStella and my journey to another history lesson.
