Going green these days is good not only for the environment, but for bragging rights, and Alaska Airlines is doing just that as it prepares to ditch, reduce, recycle plastic items in its cabin service. It claims to be the first airline with the goal of complete elimination.
Plastic stirrers are giving way to wood or bamboo, plastic drink cups will be refilled rather than replaced, plastic straws will be gone soon (replacement still being researched). In the beverage department, cans are replacing bottles.
Some of the moves may seem small, but Alaska’s count for last year on straws and citrus picks last year was 22 million, and they’re known to be especially harmful to marine life.
It’s not Alaska’s first green move, either: the airline has been a serious investor in alternative fuels and biofuels for aircraft.
