What makes the train ride from Mandalay to Hsipaw so popular is the Gokteik Viaduct. This ride is shaking affair: a constant rolling and shaking, plus noises that made me think the train will disintegrate at any moment. The tracks are in such bad state that the train keeps bouncing around, making me wonder why on earth it doesn’t derail…
Finally, Gokteik Viaduct. Built in 1901, it was then the world’s second highest train bridge at 318 feet. It still is the longest bridge in Myanmar with a span of 2,257 feet. In order not to stress the vulnerable structure, we crossed at a crawling pace looking down, down … 100 meters into the gorge!
