Amsterdam has a reputation as a party town, especially for rowdy and frequently drunken stag parties for the about-to-be-married—but the city is now saying that enough is enough.
The city says the biggest ‘nuisance visitors’ are Dutch and British men, ages 18-34, and is targeting a media campaign at them, asking them to “enjoy and respect” the city by not urinating in the streets, getting drunk in public and more.
The campaign’s posters emphasize the stiff fines for violations (€140 for urination, €95 for intoxication) and the opportunities to avoid them as shown in the poster above.
Frans van der Avert, head of Amsterdam’s tourism marketing organization, told Het Parool that ‘It’s a minority, but a very loud minority that offends people. Yes, I would like them to go other places, but I’m also a realist. We are a free city, and proud of that, but you have to be respectful. If you don’t, you will be fined.’
