If predictions by Emirates Airlines head Tim Clark are on the mark, you may soon be flying in windowless planes with a choice of virtual decor on the wall next to you.
While many of us love looking down from the sky, windowless planes, such as today’s freighter models, have a number of advantages. For one, eliminating the windows eliminates weight. For another, the uninterrupted fuselage is stronger. And finally, the plane produces less turbulence. And all that translates into better fuel economy and even faster speeds.
Emirates is already flying what could be a prototype for high-quality virtual windows; its newest 777s have suites in first class, three across. The suites in the middle have no windows, but have the screens installed.
Still, there are concerns; some passengers might find the experience claustrophobic, and some experts have suggested that being able to see out is an important safety concern.
