Workers on an aqueduct-building project in Rome, to no one’s surprise, ran into ancient Roman artifacts as they worked. What was surprising is that the more-than-2000-year-old burial chamber they found was intact.
In the chamber, archaeologists called to the scene found four skeletons, two of males lying on shelves and a man and woman on the floor. Also in the tomb were a variety of objects including offerings of chicken, rabbit and what’s believed to be lamb.
Among the objects were two strigils, a kind of instrument Roman athletes used to wipe off sweat; for that reason it’s been nicknamed the ‘Tomb of the Athlete.’
