Stockholm opens new nature reserve

Stockholm has added a tenth nature reserve to its portfolio, this one south of the city center, where Lake Malaren meets the Baltic Sea.

City councillors described the area, which includes forest lands and three islands reachable only by boat, as “a central part of the city’s core ecological area.”

The forested area, which includes a large area of allotment gardens and a former manor house, will provide areas for walking, running, cycling and swimming. The three islands are home to diverse vegetation and several protected species.

The city has also decided to move forward on creation of another reserve southeast of the city center, and is eyeing other areas.
