Belgium’s one nudist beach, at Bredene, will continue to be the only one for some time as a small, but rare, bird has derailed plans for a second haven for all-over tan fans.
The existing beach is so popular and sometimes crowded that Belgian naturists began campaigning for a second beach, and thought they had found the solution, a little-used beach near Westende. However, the Flemish Agency for nature is opposing the bid on behalf of the crested lark, which uses the area as a brooding ground.
The agency says that brooding would be disrupted, and might be further dismayed by “subsidiary activity” in the dunes behind the beach, including rubbish.
