Twin Harbors is home to the oldest functioning lighthouse in the state of Minnesota. The lighthouse is situated on the shore of massive Lake Superior, overlooking Agate Bay. Twin Harbors is a major shipping port for iron ore and the lighthouse helps guide ore ships to safety.
The lighthouse was completed in 1892. it stands 49.6 ft (15.1 m) tall and sits 78 ft (24 m) above lake level. The lighthouse complex is actually amalgamation of several structures including the tower, lighthouse keeper’s quarters, assistant keeper’s house, fog signal building, oil house, skiff house and a garage.
The light is still used to this day and can shine 31 km (20 miles). The lighthouse is now owned by the Lake County Historical Society which maintains it and allows visitors to explore the site.
