Ireland gets an ‘Oyster Trail’

Oyster lovers have a new reason to plan a trip to Ireland: an ‘Oyster Experience’ in Sligo, as part of the ‘Taste the Atlantic’ initiative, sponsored by Ireland’s Fisheries and Tourism boards.

The oyster ticket goes for €20 and includes a walking tour followed by oyster shucking demonstrations and tastings. Tour organizer Aisling Kelly heads the tastings and describes the “sharp brine and rich finish of local Wild Atlantic Oysters,” as well as their unique varieties in Sligo Bay.

Overall, Taste the Atlantic, which covers western Ireland locations from Inishowen to Cork, involves 21 producers. Jim O’Toole, chair of one of the sponsoring groups says that “The vision is to provide visitors the opportunity to explore, understand and get to know how the wild Atlantic waters influence the production and taste of some of Ireland’s seafood.”
