European air service is occasionally interrupted by strikes of pilots, cabin crew, air traffic controllers and others, but Amsterdam Schiphol may be about to experience a new kind of strike: Security staff unions have called for a 24-hour strike next Tuesday.
In a dispute over pay and work schedules, security screeners have already held a series of 15-minute stoppages up to five times a day for the past five weeks. The airport administration went to court to ban further disruptions. The judge ruled that the workers could extend their strike, but only after September 2.
Union leaders told broadcasters that ‘Schiphol has been told now because a 24 hour strike will have consequences for the airport and air traffic. That means things can be organised in an orderly way. Travelers can be informed in time, tickets can be rebooked, flights cancelled etc.’
In addition to Schiphol, other locations may be affected but have not been notified yet.
