Often Istanbul’s Spice Bazaar is overlooked for the Grand Bazaar, but if you have time, make the historic and lively Spice Bazaar a stop on your city tour.
Construction began in 1597 by Safiye Sultan, the wife of Murat III. Construction was completed in 1664 by Hatice Torhan Sultan, mother of Mehmet IV within the complex of the New Mosque.
In addition to spices, the market features candies and other sweets including Turkish Delight, tea and coffee, serving ware and all other manner of souvenirs. It is a great place to talk to the locals and get a feel for the city. There is no pressure when shopping and prices are very competitive. Negotiations are not necessary.
The first time I visited a Bazaar like this I was amazed with the colours and sights. Reminded me of the time when after years of black and white TV I saw my first Colour TV – Speechless !!
