The largest horse airlift in history is underway, with hundreds of horses flying into Greenville-Spartanburg airport in North Carolina for the World Equestrian Games, which kick off Monday.
Since the horses, who are trained athletes in their own right, have to arrive not only safely but ready to compete, the arrangements are very special. They get customized stalls, independent air conditioning and plenty of feed, in-flight snacks and water—along with their own corps of flight attendants.
Most of the flights are on specially-modified Boeing 777 freighters that can carry up to about 70 horses at a tiime.
