Portugal’s all-too-sunny forecast

Europe’s unusually hot summer and bright sunshine has had its pluses and minuses, one of which is increased chances of excessive sun exposure.

For Portugal’s Algarve, in the southern part of the country, as well as Madeira and Beja, where late-summer UV levels in the sunlight are especially high, the government’s meteorological office has issued a UV alert, calling on sunbathers to use filtered sunglasses, hats, shirts and sun cream, as well as keeping children out of the sun. Not a prescription for a great beach holiday!

Meanwhile, several areas of the Algarve have been put on highest level of alert for wildfires due to long-term dry conditions and high heat. Several areas there have already suffered serious fires earlier in the summer, especially Monchique
