Oktoberfest in high gear and in the air

Munich’s annual giant beer festival—still called Oktoberfest even though more of it is in September than October—has a new venue this year, in addition to the traditional festival grounds on the ground, which attract over six million visitors each year for food, traditional music and, of course, oceans of beer.

Lufthansa has joined in the celebration by rolling kegs of special Oktoberfest beer down the aisles on selected routes to and from Munich. Using a special keg designed to regulate CO2 to keep it from exploding, the airline offered the service on Munich to Newark on Sept. 19, when the festival started; Sept. 25 on a flight to Singapore, and will host ‘Last Call’ on Oct. 6 as the festival closes; that service will be on Munich to Shanghai.

It’s not a total first for the airline; its premium Senator service in the 1950s also included draft beer on board.
