Before 1917 there were about 1,500 churches in Moscow. During the Soviet years most were destroyed leaving only 50 from that era. After the fall of communism in 1991, churches started being rebuilt.
For example, the Cathedral of Savior the Redeemer was originally built in 1839. It was destroyed in 1931 on the order of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the church was rebuilt on the site; a tribute to the nation’s Christian faith.
Fortunately Saint Basil’s Cathedral in Red Square was spared. Completed in 1561, each dome has a distinctive design. The Cathedral was ordered by Ivan the Terrible to mark the 1552 capture of Kazan from Mongol forces.
My visit to the two churches was part of a Viking River Cruises shore excursion.
Beautiful, colourful photos Marilyn. And a concise History lesson.
Very enjoyable. Thanks. G.
