Like many of us, I grew up with the constant claim that by (name the year) everyone would have a flying car and various other incredible technological advancements. And like most, I never considered what a traffic jam OVER the street would look like when everyone was flying.
But none of that ever stopped people from dreaming and the predictions are still coming. The Telegraph (UK) recently published an interesting selection of ideas from about 1900, in which French and German futurists predicted what travel would be like in 2000—everything from a whale-powered underwater bus to ocean-going trains and even a few things that actually happened, like this 1950 prediction of self-service tickets sales and check-in:
And just so you know they weren’t all blue-sky about how things would work out, one prediction made clear: You may be able to fly from place to place, but you can’t avoid a traffic cop!
