The Bluenose 2 was built in1963 for Oland Brewery as a replica of the original Bluenose. The schooner was sold to the government of Nova Scotia for $1 in 1971 by the Oland family. Her sailing season runs from June 1 to September 30 and winters in the port of Lunenburg. She acts as sailing ambassador for the Province.
The latest restoration was completed in 2012 at a cost of about 16 million dollars and is just spectacular. We saw her in North Sydney, Nova Scotia.
The original Bluenose was built in 1921 and became a celebrated racing ship and fishing vessel. It was an important Canadian symbol in the 1930s and was put on the dime in 1937. She was a working vessel until she was wrecked in 1946.
