Lower phone rates are coming for many Europeans if the member states approve the European Parliament’s bill to cap prices on calls and messages. The bill follows last year’s action which ended roaming charges within the 28-member EU.
The measure, which caps phone calls at a maximum of 19c per minute and texts at 6c, passed the Parliament with an overwhelming majority but must now be approved by the member states. Then there will be a 42-month phase-in period.
Also included in the bill are requirements that the member states make spectrum available by 2020 for 5G systems, and that customers receive refunds for unused pre-paid credit when their contracts expired.
