To my surprise, there are five palaces and four cathedrals in the Moscow Kremlin. I knew the complex served as the official residence of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, but I had no idea of its history and beauty.
The name “Kremlin” means fortress inside a city. The word Kremlin was first used for the site in the early 14th century when a wooden fort was constructed.
Gold and silver domes top the beautiful churches that are filled with frescoes honoring Russian Orthodox saints as well as past state heroes and tsars.
The Kremlin is a popular tourist destination. It is advisable to get there right when it opens. My visit was part of a Viking River Cruises shore excursion.
