After 800 years, one of the few remaining portions of Brussels’ medieval city walls fell Sunday into the playground of a next-door school. The city has vowed to rebuild it, using the original stones.
No one was injured in the collapse, which happened early Sunday morning when the school was closed. Buildings nearby are being checked for damage. The wall that fell was about 10 metres high and 20 metres long, adjoining a watchtower, which was not affected.
While the city has pledged to rebuild it ‘identical to how it was before’ it’s not clear who will pay for the work. The school has a renovation project in progress, and investigators will try to determine whether the work caused the collapse, in which case the school and its contractors will be billed for the work.
