(Everyone’s leaving) Home for the Holidays

Next week the holiday traffic starts, and you’re very likely to be caught in it.

AAA is predicting a travel record for Americans this Christmas season, and with long delays on the road, and possibly in the air, as a result. Their prediction: one of every three of us will leave home.

That’s 112.5 million people, and 102 million of us will be on the highway to somewhere at least 50 miles from home. We’re not even including local traffic here. That’s up 4.4% from last year, and the most since the auto club started counting in 2001.

Another 6.7 million will fly, and 3.7 million will be on trains, buses and cruise ships. Or trying to get to their planes, trains, buses and cruise ships. Traffic experts at INRIX gave AAA their estimates on the worst times to get into and out of major cities, and how much longer than usual it can take—up to four times as long.
