The drone incidents at London Gatwick airport may or may not have been a real attempt to interfere with air traffic, but they certainly caused big disruptions to travel, and airports everywhere are taking a new look at drone defense.
Gatwick itself, and nearby Heathrow, have already taken steps and are investing millions in trying to avoid it ever happening again. A Gatwick spokesperson told reporters the airport has already spent several million pounds on new defenses, and Heathrow has confirmed it’s doing the same.
Of course, neither airport will specify exactly what it’s doing, but it’s believed that one of the main installations is Drone Dome, a system developed by an Israeli tech company that works by detecting and jamming communication between a drone and its controller.
The systems, which uses four radars and has a range of several miles, is among the measures used by British military and airport officials during the Gatwick crisis.
